only. The number of scholars on the Roll is at present 1,126, and during 1899 the average attendance was $87-05, and the total number of scholars on Roll was 1,344. The staff consist 1 Head Master, 1 Second Master, 4 Assistants (Senior Grade) and 4 Assistants (Junior Grade) Europeans, assisted by 11 Native Teachers, and 5 Pupil Teachers. Now that no test is applied to knowledge of Chinese, very young boys, say nine years old, Chinese reckoning, enter and consequent education here commences with the A. B. C. and goes up to the Senior Oxford Local Examinati Standard.

The education given in the three other named institutions is very similar. scholars attending these schools for the year is as follows:-

It should here be mentioned that girls educated at the Belilios Public School also go in for Oxford Local Examinations including the Senior division.

A-Hospitals:--

V.-GOVERNMENT INSTITUTIONS.

The Government Hospitals consist of the Civil Hospital to which is attached an isolated Lying Hospital; Kennedy Town Infectious Diseases Hospital, and the Hospital Hulk Hygeia.

G-FIRE BRIGADE.

The Fire Brigade is a sub-department of the Police Department, and is under the control of the

ptain Superintendent of Police.

The European Staff consists of:-

1 Superintendent.

1 Assistant Superintendent.

1 Engineer.

1 Assistant Engineer.

1 Overscer of Water Works.

$ Foremen.

7 Engine Drivers. 28 Firemen,

All of these except the Engineer are members of the Police Force.

The Chinese Staff consists of:--

3 Engine Drivers. 8 Stokers.

22 Firemen.

15 Watchmen.

3 Seamen.

4 Interpreters.

The Brigade has a powerful floating fire engine for use in the Harbour, 4 land steam engines, and despatch boxes each carrying 300 feet of hose and the necessary appliances, placed at fixed points

The Civil Hospital contains 124 beds in 18 wards. Eight beds are reserved for first and seroughout the City either in charge of firemen or of Policemen on beat duty. class paying patients; 38 for Europeans of all nationalities; 54 for Chinese, Japanese and Indian and 16 for females of all nationalities.

The Lying-in Hospital contains 6 beds for Europeans and 4 for Asiatics.

Kennedy Town Infectious Diseases Hospital has 28 beds in the main building and 50 beds matshed annexures. The Hygeia has accommodation for 12 European patients and 100 Asiatics.

Two thousand seven hundred and thirty-four in-patients and over 13,000 out-patients were treat at the Government Civil Hospital in 1899. The Nursing Staff consists of a Matron and traine nurses obtained from England.

The Tung Wa Hospital is supported by charitable contributions of the Chinese community a by an endowment from the Government. All the land on which it stands was granted by the Gor

ernment.

It contains 170 beds for Chinese patients only; 2,542 in-patients and 90,081 out-patients wi treated at this Hospital during the year, and 2,261 persons were vaccinated.

The Hospital is under the daily supervision of a European Member of the Government Medics Staff. The Resident Surgeon is a Chinese qualified in Western medical science.

B.-Asylumos.-The European Lunatic Asylum contains 8 beds in eight separate wards. Th Chinese Lunatic Asylum has 16 beds.

C.-There is no poor house in the Colony. The Tung Wa Hospital undertakes, in a great u sure, the relief of Chinese destitutes.
